Can AI Conduct Fair Technical Interviews?
AI-powered interview platforms promise consistency and scale. But can they eliminate bias?
AI-powered interview platforms promise consistency and scale. But can they eliminate bias?
AI-powered interview platforms promise to make technical hiring more consistent, scalable, and objective. By using standardized questions and algorithmic evaluation, they can reduce certain types of human bias. However, they also introduce new risks around algorithmic bias, lack of nuance, and poor candidate experience.
AI can provide consistent evaluation criteria across all candidates, reduce fatigue-based bias (the tendency to evaluate later candidates differently), and scale to handle high volumes of candidates. For initial screening rounds, AI can be useful for filtering.
AI systems can encode bias from training data, struggle to evaluate nuanced or creative solutions, and create a poor candidate experience when the technology feels impersonal or glitchy. The best approach combines AI efficiency for initial screening with human judgment for final evaluation.
