API Design Best Practices for REST and GraphQL
A well-designed API is a joy to use. Here are the principles that lead to great API design.
A well-designed API is a joy to use. Here are the principles that lead to great API design.
A well-designed API is one of the most valuable assets a development team can create. It enables client applications to consume data efficiently, allows multiple teams to work in parallel, and creates a clear contract between systems. Good API design principles apply whether you're building REST or GraphQL.
Design your API from the consumer's perspective, not your internal data model. Use consistent naming conventions. Provide proper error handling with meaningful error messages. Version your API from day one. Include thorough documentation with examples. Design for evolvability — adding fields is safe, removing or changing fields is breaking.
REST is simpler to implement, has better caching semantics, and benefits from years of established best practices. GraphQL provides more flexible querying, reduces over-fetching, and is better suited for complex data requirements. Choose based on your specific needs rather than following trends.
