Good design signals attention to detail. Here's how to make your portfolio look polished without being a designer.
You don't need to be a professional designer to have a good-looking portfolio. Following basic design principles can make your portfolio look polished and professional, signaling to employers that you have attention to detail — a quality valued at every engineering level.
Focus on consistent spacing, readable typography (use system fonts or a simple Google Font), a clear color palette (2-3 colors maximum), and lots of whitespace. Your portfolio should be clean, easy to navigate, and fast-loading. Tools like Tailwind CSS or pre-built templates can give you a professional look without design expertise.
Don't use too many fonts or colors. Don't overload your portfolio with animations or effects that slow it down. Don't use dark patterns or confusing navigation. Your portfolio's design should make your content shine, not distract from it.
