Maintaining a popular open source project is one of the most rewarding — and challenging — experiences in software engineering. As your project grows, the demands on your time and attention grow too. Without sustainable practices, maintainer burnout is almost inevitable. Here's what we've learned from maintaining popular open source projects.

Building a sustainable maintenance practice

Set clear contribution guidelines that make it easy for others to help. Automate wherever possible — use CI/CD, automated testing, and bots for routine tasks. Learn to say no gracefully — not every feature request needs to be accepted. Build a community of maintainers rather than trying to do everything yourself.

Growing a healthy community

Recognize contributors publicly and often. Create pathways for regular contributors to become maintainers. Foster a welcoming, inclusive environment through clear codes of conduct and responsive moderation. Document your decision-making process so contributors understand why certain choices are made.
