Weeks 5-8: System Design

Study distributed systems fundamentals, database design, caching strategies, load balancing, and API design. Practice with common questions: design Twitter, Uber, WhatsApp, or a URL shortener. Focus on the reasoning process, not memorizing solutions. Draw clear diagrams and practice explaining your decisions aloud.

Weeks 9-10: Behavioral Preparation

Prepare 5-7 STAR stories covering different competencies: leadership, conflict resolution, technical challenges, failures, and successes. Practice delivering them concisely. Research the companies you're targeting and prepare questions to ask interviewers.

Weeks 11-12: Mock Interviews and Review

Do at least 3-5 mock interviews with peers or platforms like Pramp. Review weak areas. Practice coding under time pressure with a whiteboard or simple text editor. Simulate the real interview environment as closely as possible.

System design interviews assess your ability to architect scalable, reliable, and maintainable systems. They're a critical component of the interview process for mid-level and senior engineering roles. Unlike coding interviews that test specific algorithms, system design interviews evaluate your holistic understanding of software architecture.

Core topics to study

Distributed systems fundamentals (CAP theorem, consistency models), database design (SQL vs NoSQL, sharding, replication), caching strategies (CDN, Redis, Memcached), load balancing, API design (REST, GraphQL, gRPC), and messaging systems (Kafka, SQS, RabbitMQ).

Common system design questions

Practice designing: Twitter/X (news feed, tweet delivery), Uber (ride matching, ETA calculation), WhatsApp (real-time messaging), YouTube (video processing,
