Testing Strategies for Modern Web Applications
A comprehensive testing strategy balances speed, confidence, and coverage. Here's how to build one.

A comprehensive testing strategy is essential for building reliable software. But not all tests are created equal, and testing everything at the same level leads to slow, brittle test suites that provide diminishing returns. The key is understanding the testing trophy — a more balanced approach than the traditional testing pyramid.
Static analysis (TypeScript, ESLint) catches entire categories of bugs at build time. Unit tests cover business logic and edge cases. Integration tests verify that components work together correctly. End-to-end tests cover critical user flows. The trophy shape emphasizes that integration tests provide the most value for the effort.
Focus testing effort on areas with the highest risk and complexity. Write unit tests for business logic and utility functions. Write integration tests for API endpoints and database interactions. Write a small number of E2E tests for critical user journeys. Use code coverage as a guide, not a target — 100% coverage doesn't mean 100% confidence.
