How Often Should You Update Your Developer Portfolio?
An outdated portfolio is worse than no portfolio. Here's a maintenance schedule that works.
An outdated portfolio is worse than no portfolio. Here's a maintenance schedule that works.
An outdated portfolio can hurt your job search more than having no portfolio at all. It signals that you've stopped growing or that you don't care enough to keep your professional presence current. A regular maintenance schedule keeps your portfolio fresh and effective.
Update your portfolio whenever you complete a significant project, learn a new technology, or change roles. At minimum, do a quarterly review: refresh your project descriptions, update your skills section, and remove anything that no longer represents your best work.
Use GitHub Actions or similar tools to automate parts of your portfolio. Automatically pull your latest pinned repositories, contribution graph, or blog posts. Automation ensures your portfolio stays current even when you're busy with other priorities.
