Async communication is the backbone of remote work. Here's how to thrive in a distributed team.

Working across multiple time zones is one of the biggest challenges of remote work. Without intentional strategies, it can lead to communication delays, scheduling conflicts, and feelings of isolation. But with the right approach, async communication becomes a superpower that makes you a more effective engineer.
Write documentation first — before asking a question in chat, check if the answer exists in documentation. Over-communicate context in every message so colleagues in other time zones don't need to ask follow-up questions. Use tools like Loom for async video updates, and invest in good documentation practices.
Identify overlap hours with your team and protect them for synchronous collaboration. Use scheduling tools that show everyone's time zone. Establish norms around response time expectations — not everything needs an immediate reply. Respect others' off-hours and expect them to respect yours.
