Async Communication: The Superpower of Senior Remote Engineers
The best remote engineers communicate asynchronously by default. Here's how to master this critical skill.
The best remote engineers communicate asynchronously by default. Here's how to master this critical skill.
Async communication — the ability to convey complex information without requiring real-time interaction — is the most important skill for remote engineers. Senior engineers in distributed teams distinguish themselves by their ability to write clearly, document thoroughly, and communicate context effectively across time zones.
Write clear, structured documentation that someone in another time zone can read and understand without follow-up questions. Use descriptive commit messages, detailed PR descriptions, and thorough issue reports. Invest time in writing good RFCs and design documents that communicate your thinking to the entire team.
Use tools designed for async communication: Loom for video updates, Notion or Confluence for documentation, Linear or Jira for project management, and Slack or Discord for text communication. The key is choosing tools that record and organize information so it's accessible to everyone, regardless of when they work.
