The STAR method is the most effective framework for behavioral interviews. Here's how to master it.
The STAR method — Situation, Task, Action, Result — is the most widely recommended framework for answering behavioral interview questions. It provides a structured way to communicate your experience that's easy for interviewers to follow and evaluate.
Situation: Set the context. Describe the situation or background briefly. Task: Explain your specific responsibility or goal. Action: Describe the specific actions you took — this is the most important part and should focus on your individual contribution. Result: Share the outcomes, including measurable results when possible.
Prepare 5-7 stories that cover different competencies: technical challenges, leadership and initiative, conflict resolution, failures and learning, teamwork and collaboration, and project management. Practice each story until you can deliver it naturally in 2-3 minutes. Be specific about your individual contribution — use "I" not "we."
