Getting promoted as a remote engineer requires more intentional effort than in an office setting. Without physical presence, your work and impact aren't automatically visible to leadership. You need to be proactive about communicating your contributions and building relationships across the organization.
Document your accomplishments and share them in team meetings and 1:1s. Volunteer for high-visibility projects. Write post-mortems and design docs that showcase your thinking. Present your work in company-wide meetings. Build relationships with stakeholders outside your immediate team through regular check-ins.
Invest in building relationships with your manager and skip-level. Schedule regular career conversations and be clear about your goals. Seek out mentorship from senior leaders, even if they're not on your team. The key to promotion as a remote engineer is ensuring your impact is known, not just delivered.
