One developer's journey from filing bug reports to becoming a core maintainer of a major framework.
The path from user to maintainer of a major open source project is well-traveled but rarely documented. This is the story of one developer's journey from filing bug reports and asking questions to becoming a core maintainer of Next.js, one of the most popular web frameworks.
It starts with using the project and encountering problems. You file bug reports with detailed reproductions. You answer questions in the community to help others. You submit small documentation improvements. You fix minor bugs. You build relationships with existing maintainers. Eventually, you're invited to become a maintainer yourself.
Consistency matters more than size. Small, regular contributions build trust and familiarity with the codebase. Building relationships with the community is as important as writing code. Being helpful, responsive, and humble goes a long way. The journey to maintainer isn't about being the smartest person in the room — it's about being the most reliable.
