What Interviewers Actually Look for in Whiteboard Coding

It's not about the right answer. Here's what interviewers evaluate during live coding sessions.
Many developers believe that whiteboard coding interviews are about getting the right answer as quickly as possible. In reality, interviewers evaluate a much broader set of criteria, and getting the right answer is only part of the assessment. Understanding what interviewers actually look for can transform how you approach live coding.
Interviewers evaluate: communication (do you explain your thinking?), problem-solving (do you explore multiple approaches before coding?), coding ability (is your code clean and correct?), collaboration (do you accept feedback and incorporate it?), and technical knowledge (do you understand trade-offs and edge cases?).
Start by clarifying requirements and constraints. Think aloud as you explore approaches. Write clean code with meaningful variable names. Test your solution with examples. Discuss trade-offs and alternative approaches. If you get stuck, ask for hints — interviewers want to see how you handle challenges, not that you never face them.
