First Technical Hire: What to Look for in an Early-Stage Engineering Lead
Your first engineering hire sets the technical culture for your entire company. Here's how to find the right person.
Your first engineering hire sets the technical culture for your entire company. Here's how to find the right person.
Your first technical hire is the most important hire you'll make as a startup founder. This person will set the technical direction, build the initial architecture, and shape the engineering culture for years to come. Getting this hire right is critical to your startup's success.
Look for versatility — your first engineer needs to work across the entire stack. Judgment is more important than specific technical skills — they need to make good decisions about technology choices, architecture, and trade-offs. Most importantly, they need to be aligned with your mission and startup culture.
Sell the vision and impact. Early-stage engineers are motivated by the opportunity to build something from scratch and have outsized impact. Be transparent about the risks (startups fail) and rewards (equity, autonomy, learning). Offer competitive salary with meaningful equity.
