The Rise of Work Sample Tests in Engineering Hiring
Work sample tests predict job performance better than whiteboard coding. Here's why more companies are adopting them.
Work sample tests predict job performance better than whiteboard coding. Here's why more companies are adopting them.
Work sample tests — where candidates complete a task similar to actual job work — have the highest predictive validity of any interview method. They're fairer, more relevant, and give candidates a realistic preview of what the job entails. More companies are adopting them as an alternative or supplement to traditional whiteboard interviews.
Work sample tests evaluate candidates on tasks they would actually perform in the role. For a backend engineer, this might mean designing and implementing an API endpoint. For a frontend engineer, building a UI component. This direct relevance produces higher predictive validity than abstract algorithmic problems.
Common formats include: take-home projects (build a small application), pair programming sessions (collaborate on a real task), code review exercises (evaluate and improve existing code), and system design walkthroughs (architect a solution to a real problem).
